September 22, 2024 - Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost

During the time after Pentecost, we use the color green in our worship space to reflect this long season of growth. In the fifteenth century, Hildegard of Bingen coined the word viriditas to mean the greeining force of the Holy Spirit. Hildegard says that the "Holy Spirit is the greening power in motion, making all things grow, expand, celebrate." In parts of North America we see an abundance of different greens through the growing season: from springtime yellow-greens to the more mature true greens of July, and finally the deep greens tinged with golds, russets, and browns of autumn. This natural pattern found in much of the northern hemisphere can also reflect the growing complexity of Jesus' teachings, and the reactions of those around him, through this time. Let us be thankful for this season of growth.
